Cabinet Spokesman Prof.G.L. Peiris said there was no element of instability within the government and it has firm control over Parliament, responding to a question raised by the media at the weekly cabinet briefing yesterday. He said that this will be demonstrated at the budget vote next month where it will be passed by a comfortable margin. Prof.Peiris said the ruling of the Supreme court on the 19th Amendment was not a defeat for the Government as it has left them with a wider array of options, one being a General Election. "However, the Government is of the view that there was no imperative necessity for an immediate election right now. It is only an option among several others in consideration." The Supreme Court has also pointed out that the Government could prevent the President from dissolving Parliament up to three years with a two thirds majority in the House. Referring to the speech made by President over the state television yesterday Prof.Peiris said the government welcomes cooperation from any quarter as long as they are in support of the people's mandate extended to them at the December election. "We have been given a mandate to implement a clear program of work including the peace process and the revival of the economy. Any cooperation to implement this mandate is welcomed," he said. |
