by Jayasiri Munasinghe and Matara Central Correspondent President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga declared yesterday that she is ready to cohabit with the Government, on several conditions. The conditions will be based on a common programme for economic, social and political development of the country, President Kumaratunga said. The President was speaking at the Presidential Millennium Scholarship Awards ceremony in Matara. She said the people expect her, as the Executive President elected twice in fair elections, to cohabit with the present Government. "But I have to set several conditions to maintain cohabitation with the UNF Government," the President added. The Government should completely stop the harassment of PA supporters to ensure the success of cohabitation, she said. The Government should also work on her proposal to abolish the executive Presidency without clipping executive powers piece by piece. "We should form a system that is responsible for Parliament after abolishing the Executive Presidency." The President said the Government should educate her as the Head of State and the public about the peace process. The Government should clearly state what sort of powers they are willing to offer the LTTE. The Government should have a clear cut programme for economic development, she said. |
