Ronnie Weerakoon heads Cricket Foundation Ronnie Weerakoon, a former ambassador to Egypt and present chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board takes over as new chairman of the the Board of Trustees of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation (SLCF) from Gilbert Jayasuriya. Weerakoon, a cricketer of repute having played for S. Thomas' College, Mt Lavinia in 1946-47, captained the University of Ceylon in 1949-50 and won colours for cricket, tennis, hockey and swimming. He also played for the All-Ceylon team against the Commonwealth XI in 1951 and played cricket in the Government and Mercantile services. He also captained Badulla DCA in 1954-55. Weerakoon was a trustee of the SLCF since 1983 and will endeavour to have close relations with the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka seeking its co-operation to commence the long delayed Gamini Dissanayake Cricket Academy in Sri Lanka. Jayasuriya who was a trustee of the SLCF for over 20 years, ten of those as chairman, retires on account of ill health. He will however continue as one of the trustees. The other trustees are: Ruzly Hussain, Daham Wimalasena, Navin Dissanayake and Gilbert Jayasuriya. |
