News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Govt has failed to reduce cost of living - Mahinda Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse in a media release yesterday condemned the Government's policy of curtailing public relief measures including Samurdhi, labour rights and pension and EPF benefits in order to satisfy the capitalist class on the dictates of the World Bank. It pointed out that the increased prices of fuel including kerosene oil will enhance the cost of living which is already unbearable. The UNF Government which came to power promising to fill the pockets of the poor have failed to bring down the prices of essential consumer commodities during their 10 month rule. All opposition parties are now under the recently established "Joint Organisation for Protecting National Resources and People's Rights" in order to agitate against the government's policies of escalating the cost of living, privatisation and axing of workers' rights, the release said. |
