News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Mangala, 4 others charged on several counts by Sarath Malalasekera Former PA Minister Mangala Samaraweera and five of his supporters were yesterday charged before the Matara Magistrate on a number of counts including unlawful assembly and the attempted murder of several UNP supporters of Sagala Ratnayake, Deputy Minister of Power and Energy, on November 4, 2002 at Dampella, Akuressa. Earlier Mangala Samaraweera who was accompanied by a team of lawyers including President's Counsel M. M. Zuhair, with Sripathy Sooriyarachchi and Ananda Gunatilleke made a lengthy statment to the CID in connection with the incident. The CID conducted fresh investigations into the alleged attack on several UNP supporters by the supporters of Mangala Samaraweera at Dampella, Akuressa on November 4 last year. They took four MSD personnel and two others who had been allegedly involved in the attack into custody. They were later released on bail. The CID commenced fresh investigations into the attack on the direction of Interior Minister John Amaratunga. Kasun Madhu Shantha (18), a student of Akuressa lost an eye and several others received serious injuries following the attack. The Matara Magistrate directed the suspects to appear before court on December 12, 2002. |
