Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, Minister Irrigation and Water Management thanks all those who supported the Mahaweli Mahima Pageant and the 16th Mahaweli Sports Festival associated with it, states a press release. The Minister said the week-long Mahaweli Mahima Festival held at Galnewa had extensive participation and wide-spread support. The release adds: among the special features that stood out in this festival were the programmes conducted for the benefit of children, the youth, farmers and women." The Festival provided a venue for the meeting of Tamil and Muslim students from the North and the East, with their Sinhala counterparts in the South. These meetings between children, brought about greater harmony and understanding among them. Education Officials, Principals and Teachers, who made this programme a success, receive my grateful thanks. Trade Fairs, exhibitions of Arts and crafts were among the highlights of this festival. A festival of such a major scale would have been well-nigh impossible had it not been for the dedicated support extended by people at a variety of levels. I consider it my duty to thank all those who supported these festival events with a commitment that is quite impressive. I must thank all those who participated in the twin festivals from near and far, braving the inclement weather that marred some aspects of these festivals." The Minister concludes: "While thanking all those from our Ministry and other Ministries and State Institutions, I wish to express my gratitude especially to the Private Sector organizations who assisted us generously. I look forward to their support and participation on future occasions as well." |
