by Matale district group correspondent The human-elephant conflict in border villages of Matale district is acute, causing immense hardships to the public. The elephants in Wasgamuwa, Sigiriya and Pallekele Sanctuaries are coming daily to the border villages and causing severe damage. During the last decade about hundred persons were killed and the individual properties valued over Rs. 50 million were destroyed by the wild elephants. Moragalla, Aluthwewa, Rotawewa and Babaragaswewa situated in the border of Pallekele Sanctuary have been faced by the threat of wild elephants frequently. The Talkote, Polatthawa and Diyakepilla attached to the Sigiriya Sanctuary are also in same position. The border villages of Laggala near Wasgamuwa Sanctuary are also in severe threat of wild elephants. During the last year the wild elephants have invaded town areas like Matale, Madawela-Ulpotha and Dambulla. However the Wildlife Conservation Department is unable to take suitable action to avoid this situation. According to Wildlife Conservation officials, they are unable to implement a programme for this matter without even the basic facilities. Therefore the public ask the Government to attend to this problem as early as possible. |
