Have people deviated from main aim of education? - Principal Uduvil Girls College

by Jaffna special correspondent

There is hardly a year that rolls by without the educators having to break their heads often in despair over some new change. At this juncture a question arises in the minds of intellectuals whether our people have deviated form the main aim of education. When we peruse the predilection of our parents they seem to be greatly gratified with mere acquisition of A's in public examinations.

This should never be the sole aim of an education which is on a higher plane where the child is enabled to develop innate skills and harmonize them with social, ethical and spiritual ideals. It is unfortunate that many parents have unrealistic expectations and push their children into fields for which they have no inclination or basic aptitude, said Dr. Miss C.V. Selliah Principal Uduvil Girls College.

She was presenting her annual prize day report at the annual prize giving of the college.

The Most Rev. Dr. K.J. Samuel, Moderator of the Church of South India and Mrs. A. Samuel were the chief guests. Rt. Rev. Dr. S. Jebanesan Bishop in Jaffna Church of South India presided at the function.

Dr. Miss Selliah said, It is a fact and not a fancy that no child is talented in every field as it is implied in the famous saying: "A mountain can't crack a nut and a squirrel can't shoulder the sky". Parents should let each child choose the field that suits his or her ability. She said that Uduvil provides a curriculum that caters to a broad spectrum of potentialities among the children. Along with the pursuit of academic excellence we also focus on the development of the necessary qualities for the children to face the challenges of life and to assume leadership roles.

Most Rev. Bishop Dr. Samuel in his speech said that the aim of education is not merely acquiring knowledge but equipping oneself with training to face the challenges in life. It is those who meet this challenge successfully could rise up in the ladder of life. The love, harmony, dedication and discipline inculcated in christian institutions have enabled me to be here as a chief guest of this prestigious college. Let us hold aloft the torch of ethics and learning lit by the American missionaries who founded this college and spread its radiance to all corners of the world and drive out the vermins of ignorance, malice and hatred that infest the dark caverns of our heart.

Rt. Rev. Dr. S. Jebanesan Bishop in Jaffna, Church of South India said that Dr. Miss C.V. Selliah the principal of the college has by her meritorious services and educational excellence won a pride of place for Uduvil Girls College in the fields of studies and co-curricular activities. She is a serene, rare and precious jewel that adorns the diadem of Uduvil. If Alfred Nobel had reserved a prize for public relationship the choice would have been none other than Dr. Miss Selliah.

Miss Suvithira Panniruharan Head Prefect proposed the vote of thanks.
