from P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Muthu Sivalingam, addressing a meting at Nuwara Eliya called upon the Government, the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the head of the state President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to take swift action in combating the situation in the Eastern Province, and ensure no more innocent persons lose their lives. He said the death toll hitherto experienced among the civilians and others over the years was enough and at a time when the climate was so conducive towards reaching and finding a solution to the ethnic conflict, no more unfortunate and ugly situation should raise its head, and it was the collective responsibility of both the government, and the opposition to stop situations experienced in the Eastern province a few days ago. He warned the rumour mongers and other reactionaries to be cautious towards capitalising on situations for their own political and other gains. Muthu Sivalingam requested the plantation workers and others in the hill country not to fall prey on unfortunate situations taking place elsewhere. On questions raised by estate leaders on the proposed Upper Kotmale Oya project, Muthu Sivalingam, said already the C.W.C. leadership and other responsible persons including the chief incumbent of Malwatta chapter have brought it to the notice of the government and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe of the various impending dangers of such a project being launched. He said the government will give considerations into all its aspects and stop it in the larger interest of the masses living in this part of the country. S. Chandrian, S. Ratnam, Ms. K. Parwathy and several others also spoke. |
