The ceremony to deposit scared objects in the 100 feet Buddha statue on the Ethugala in Kurunegala will be held at 10 a.m. on October 18 under the patronage of Venerable Welamitiyawe Kusaladamma Thera, the chancellor of the Kelaniya University and the Chief Sanganayake of Colombo and Chilaw. A copper sheet "Kurunegala Puranaya" which describes Kurunegala today will also be placed in the Buddha statue for observance of anybody even after thousand years. The organising committee has made arrangements for devotees also to deposit scared objects in the Buddha statue. The estimated cost of the statue is over 15 million rupees. The pedestal on which the statue will be constructed will be 74 feet long and 43 feet wide. Two two-storied buildings will be constructed beneath the pedestal for a Buddhist museum and a conference hall. The statue will be visible to a distance of ten miles. The project is being conducted by Hastisilapura Buduruwa Sanwardana Samithiya of the Kurunegala YMBA. The secretary is H. W. Hamangoda and K. B. Atapattu is the treasurer. The sculptor is Rohana Dharmasena, son of the world famous sculptor Henry Darmasena and the technological assistance is supplied by Milton Wijesundara, an engineer of the Road Development Authority in the area. The Buddha statue will be opened on Vesak Full Moon Poya day next year. |
