President's speech: PM demands Rs.150m as damages

Samararatne Associates, Lawyers for Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have sent a letter of demand to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, claiming a sum of rupees 150 million as damages on behalf of their client.

The letter said that a speech she made at Hector Kobbekaduwa Commemoration Ceremony, Pilimatalawa on September 20, she has caused damage to the name and title of their client, the Prime Minister.

The letter alleges that being the Leader of the People's Alliance and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, as well as a people's leader, the President has at this meeting stated Aiyage ekata Anduwe bankuwakin miliyana 150 dunna. Ada wenakan gevala nehe. Ranil agamethi kale oka patanganna (Rs.150 million was paid out of a state bank for the elder brother's concern. It has not been repaid to date. This was started when Ranil was the Prime Minister.)

The letter of demand further states that this was a false, malicious and sarcastic statement defamatory of their client, uttered in the presence of a large gathering and that if the President fails to make this payment within a month of receipt of this letter, they have been instructed to file action against her.
