Bhutto party victory predicted ISLAMABAD, Wednesday (AFP) A poll of almost 3,000 Pakistani voters suggests the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) of banned ex-premier Benazir Bhutto will score the largest vote in parliamentary elections next week. The poll, commissioned by the BBC's Urdu-language website BBCUrdu.com and conducted by Oasis International Pakistan, interviewed 2,827 eligible voters in 99 cities and towns and 100 villages in late September. Around 27 percent of respondents predicted the PPP would win a narrow lead while 24 percent anticipated victory for pro-government parties, according to the website. Women voters predicted cricket-hero-turned-politician Imran Khan would head the new government, even though his Tehreek-i-Insaf party won no seats at the last elections. The poll found few predictions of a win by the anti-Musharraf Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of ousted and exiled ex-premier Nawaz Sharif. Only 12 percent of urban respondents in the party's heartland of Punjab province believed it would win a majority of seats. Bhutto was rated both the best and the worst prime minister over the last two decades. Nawaz Sharif emerged as both the second best and the second worst prime minister over the same period. |
