Navy ID parade: Photographer identified by Rashomi Silva The controversy over the photographing of the private residence of Navy Commander Daya Sandagiri took an interesting turn with the unprecedented step of an identification parade being conducted at the Navy Headquarters yesterday. Two villagers have identified the photographer who took pictures of the private residence in Veyangoda, defence sources told the daily News. The man who photographed the residence had been identified as a sailor attached to the security unit of the Navy Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Mohan Wijeyawickrame. According to the source, the Commander's private residence had been photographed on August 28, while the commander was out of the island. Admiral Wijeyawickrame told the Daily News that this is the first time an identification parade was held in the Navy whose laws do not permit the holding of identification parades. Should there be an ID parade it should be conducted by the Police or by the magistrate. Police investigations may have concluded that somebody had photographed the commander's residence but that does not mean that his (Wijeyawickrame's) people were involved in it, he said. "All my vehicles and men were in Colombo that day," he said. Wijeyawickrame said: "A very unorthodox identification parade was held despite my objections. I was told to produce my sailors." One of them had been identified as the person who took the pictures. |
