The annual exhibition and sale of ornamental plants by Sri Lanka's oldest Horticultural Society "Lanka in Bloom 2002" will be different from the usual commercial sales at Viharamaha Devi Park in more ways than one. While all incomes go towards promotion of horticulture and self employment, the project which commences on October 4 will be declared open by Sri Lankan Cricket Captain Sanath Jayasuriya and Mrs. Jayasuriya and will be graced by a number of national cricketers. The ceremonial opening at 4 p.m. also will include a presentation of a donation towards the Hope Children's Cancer Hospital which is a charity project by the cricketers. Mr. Dhanapala Weerasekera President of the Horticultural and Flora Conservation Society states that peoples organisation such as this society which has a wide membership of plant lovers many of whom devote time to horticulture to subsidise their income are being given a chance to felicitate their popular sportsmen and this is a welcome departure from the conventional system of inviting political figures merely to get some media coverage to help ticket sales. Unlike most such projects all funds collected are for achieving the objects environmental awareness programs and not to any private individuals. The eighty stall holders also get an opportunity to exhibit their best plants and win not only the usual Challenge Trophies but also cash awards ranging from Rs. 250 to Rs. 500 for each winner. In addition to the usual foliage and flowering plants of quality, special displays include Sri Lanka's best collection of cacti and succulents and a high quality exhibition of aquariums of for indoor decor. |
