Bloomfield make 190

by Chris Dhambarage

A fiery spell of bowling from paceman Omesh Wijesiriwardena helped Chilaw Marians Sports Club dismiss Bloomfield for a modest first innings total of 190 on the opening day of their BCCSL under 23 Division One cricket tournament final which began at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium yesterday.

The former schoolboy of Richmond College Galle exploited the conditions to the maximum after Chilaw Marians SC skipper Janaka Gunaratne had won the toss and elected to field. His decision turned out to be a good one as Bloomfield lost wickets at regular intervals in their attempt to reach a challenging first innings total.

The Bloomfield batsmen were never allowed to settle down and put up a substantial partnership with only Kaushal Weeraratne and Duminda Perera producing any noteworthy performances. Weeraratne top scored with 39 runs including one six and four fours while skipper Duminda Perera made a contribution of 34 runs. In addition Udara Weerasinghe, Ian Daniel and S. Mendis all entered their 20s but failed to go beyond that and extend their dominance. Wijesiriwardena received excellent support from his new ball partner Hasantha Fernando who captured 2 for 52. Wijesiriwardena did the bulk of the bowling while sending down 22.4 overs of his magnificent figures of 7 for 60. Chilaw Marians SC reached 19 for 1 in reply after losing Arosha Perera in the very first ball of the innings.

Bloomfield: 190 (Kaushal Weeraratne 39, Duminda Perera 34, Udara Weerasinghe 28, S. Mendis 23, Ian Daniel 22, Kaushal Lokuarachchi 14, Omesh Wijesiriwardena 7 for 60, Hasantha Fernando 2 for 52). Chilaw Marians SC: 19 for 1 (Sajith Dilantha 10 n.o)

Police SC 258

Half centuries from K. A. Asela (89) and Eranga Perera (51) helped Police SC reach 258 runs in their first innings on the opening day of their BCCSL under 23 Division two cricket tournament semifinal match against Kalutara TC played at the FTZ grounds yesterday.

Police SC: 258 (K. A. Asela 89, Eranga Perera 51, Manjula Jayawardena 34, G. H. Fernando 2 for 53, D. M. Kumara 2 for 23, E. Malaka 2 for 61, H. Kahingala 2 for 37) Kalutara TC: 46 for 3 (P. Seeman 18 n.o, R. Jinan 2 for 22). Jayawardena 6 for 89

Hadley Jayawardena captured 6 for 89 as Ragama CC dismissed Malay SC for 228 runs in their first innings on the opening day of their BCCSL under 23 Division two cricket tournament quarterfinal match played at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Malay SC: 228 (H. Jayawardena 6 for 89, M. Mallawarachchi 2 for 31) v. Ragama CC.
