Indoor Badminton Court for Panadura RC At last the residents and children schooling at Panadura will get the opportunity to exercise and hone their skills at badminton without the hindrance of weather. Panadura Recreation Club located in the heart of Panadura on Grace Peiris Mawatha has seen the dream of a pioneering effort of having an Indoor Badminton Court come true. The club better known for tennis opened it's open air badminton court in the late '70s. The club's badminton team has won several trophies. However with badminton becoming a more popular sport the open-air facility soon became insufficient to maintain high standards of play. For many years the club was searching for ways and means of making its dream come true, until a life member of the club donated an indoor badminton court made to international standards, in memory of his late father Roland Abeyratne a former member of the club and a national runners up in tennis. The club's goal achieved, many schoolboys and girls are given a chance to play badminton in an indoor court which will open a new avenue for youngsters in the Kalutara District to develop and enhance their skills further. The Panadura Recreation Club was established seventy years ago on a hereditament of land at Grace Peiris Mawatha donated to the Club by the Late Charles M. Dias, a pioneer of the temperance movement. Initially the club provided facilities for tennis, over the years the club produced players of both national and public schools level and in the All Island Inter Club Tournament, has been able to accredit themselves well. The ban on consumption of alcohol within its premises by its very constitution makes it truly a sports club for youngsters. |
