Postal Dept will not be privatised - Minister Bakeer Markar

Minister of Mass Communication Imtiasz Bakeer Markar said in Madurawala that eventhough the Postal Department incurred a loss of Rupees 970 million, the government was not ready to privatize the Postal Department.

The Minister said so at the opening of the Communication Unit at Anguruwatota Post Office in the Bulathsinhala electorate.

The Minster said that the aim of the government was to provide maximum modern postal facilities through post offices in rural areas.

Under this new program E-Mail and Fax facilities would be provided to another sixty post offices in the country this year. The people would be able to easily keep communication with other countries.

The Minister said, "After Late President J.R. Jayewardene, the Prime Minister of Sri Lnaka Ranil Wickremesinghe was lucky enough to meet the President of America George Bush and had discussion with him and his trip became a complete success bringing technical assistance to the country.

He said, "today people of Sri Lanka have been gaining temporary peace. Members of the security forces will not die. No bomb blasts. Our primary target is to gain permanent peace in the country.

Opposition Leader of WP Council Kithsiri Kahatapitiya said that Modern Communication facilities through post offices were provided only to urban areas, but we were trying to provide such facilities to rural post offices.

Sarath Ranawaka, Bulathsinahla UNP organiser, Hemantha Wickramarachchi, WP PC Member and Post Master General A. Piyasena also spoke.
