Dr. Jayalath Jayawardana honoured

The Irish International University of the European Union (EU) has honoured Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees Minister Dr. Jayalath Jayawardana by conferring on him "Professor Emeritus" in recognition of the Minister's humanitarian services.

The certificate of confirmation was handed over to Dr. Jayawardana yesterday by Professor Ralph Thomas of the Irish International University through Ambassador Hasitalo of the EU.

In handing over the certificate Professor Ralph Thomas said that the honour bestowed on Minister Jayawardana was devoid of any political or other considerations. The University had independently researched information of Minister Jayawardana's efforts at building bridges between the major and minor communities of the country. during the past few years.

The honour is bestowed annually for those who have rendered humanitarian services and earlier recipients include the late Mother Teresa of India and the former South African Prime Minister Nelson Mandela.

The official conferment of the honour on Minister Dr. Jayawardana will be held at the Irish University Convocation in Dublin scheduled for 21 September.

Dr. Jayawardana has thanked the European Union for promising to assist in the rehabilitation of the North and East.
