by Rajmi Manatunga The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi Trust has requested the public to contribute to the erection of a second 'Ranweta' (Golden Fence) around the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. The estimated cost of the gold plated fence is Rs 30 million. The Trust hopes to expand the project by raising more funds for the excavation of 100 square metres centring the Bodhi to unearth its previous stone wall built in the 18th century by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe. Briefing the media on the project, Advisor to the Prime Minister K.H.J. Wijedasa said that they have already received Rs 20 million. "At first the project was confined to the construction of the 'ranweta' but we decided to expand it at the request of the Prime Minister and the Maha Sangha. We want to preserve the Bodhi to an international standard and make it a world heritage," he said. Sri Lanka Telecom has produced a documentary film on the Bodhi free of charge and the Trust expects to produce a radio advertisement on the project as well. Donors can contribute by purchasing stickers carrying a picture of the Bodhi or buying certificates issued at Rs. 50, Rs. 100, Rs. 250, Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 at the Sri Maha Bodhi, Divisional Secretariats, Grama Niladharis, Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Ceylon Bank, People's Bank, Sampath Bank, Hatton National Bank, Commercial Bank, Nations Trust Bank, National Savings Banks branches and Elephant House and Keells supermarkets islandwide. Certificates and stickers are available at the Kalutara Bodhi Trust and with the Secretary of Associated Motorways Limited. |
