Gajaba Super Cross 2002 : Over 200 drivers and riders in action

by Bernard Perera

The third annual Gajaba Super Cross 2002 will be conducted at Saliyapura developed circuit on August 17-18, said Major General Sevalee Wanigasekera at a press briefing held at the Army headquarters, Colombo.

General said: "The event is organised by Gajaba Regiment with all assistance from Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee will be conducted by Sri Lanka Association for Racing Drivers and Riders". Continuing he told, the meet which commenced in 1999 continued for the second year, but due to unavoidable circumstances could not organise the same last year.

Adding further he said: "The main intention of organising an event of this nature was to raise funds for the welfare of the families of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for sake of the country and the disabled soldiers. The funds raised from the earlier meets have been used to provide housing facilities to families of dead soldiers. It is a requirement to have a well-equipped physiotherapy unit and a gymnasium for disabled soldiers stationed at Gajaba Regiment. This project requires around Rs. 25 million. The work on this has already commenced and total of Rs. 10 million have already been spent for this purpose. The balance is to be found with this event", he said.

Explaining further he added that last event saw nearly 200 competitors for both car and motorcycle events. This year the organisers expect over 200 competitors for the 20 events that are scheduled to run on this day. This year's events will have a new addition with the introduction of a car event for soldiers. He added that last year spectator gathering of over 40,000 witnessed the thrills and spills from our local drivers and riders.

With more enthusiasm shown the organisers expect an unusual crowd, the Gajaba Super Cross has taken up with the residents of North Central Province, this is a great achievement. He thanked the SLARDAR for coming forward to help the Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee in organising this event and as well as the other motor sports events conducted by the Sri Lanka Army.

The motor fans who throng the Saliyapura race track this time too will get the opportunity of witnessing a super grade motor racing event on this day.

Palitha Ratnayake, President of SLARDAR also was present along with his officials at the press briefing.
