Maurice Anghie here on holiday

by Sharm de Alwis Maurice Anghie is here on holiday. Anghie's family has had an illustrious tradition in sports in Sri Lanka. Brother Tony was into rugger and boxing and was in the first batch of Sandhurst trainees.

Trevor also played for Royal, CR & FC, Havelocks and Ceylon. Both brothers as well as the father were an important influence on the young Maurice. Royal under Maurice's captaincy won the Bradby in '59 even though Trinity had some splendid performers in Lions Denzil Kobbekaduwe, Tony Buultjens, and Eric Roles, coloursmen Jayantha Jayawardena (Lion in '61), Sari de Sylva, T. H. Chunchie, Gamini Fernando, Tyronne Hermaon, Rohan Madena, R. W. Madugalle, Ken Murray and Malcolm Talwatte - 12 seniors.

Before captaincy, Maurice played under D. N. Fernando to win the Bradby over Ken de Joodt's outfit 6-0 aggregate in '58, having lost 8-17 aggregate under Roti Sivaratnam against the same Trinity captain in '57.

Maurice was the reluctant prince. He could easily have aspired to the position in '60 when he came out of College to play for Havelocks and the Country. He was the smooth seller of dummies and he was hard to bring down.

But he was injury prone. The three-quarter line at Havelocks in Maurice's period was Nimal Maralande, Maurice Anghie, Rajah Sumanasekera, with Maurice de Silva and Arendtsz on the wings. Ken de Joodt was the full-back.

At the All-India tournament in Madras in the same year Maurice paired off with John Burrows as inner-threes.

A broken hip put Maurice out of action. He is now settled down in Perth. He has observed that today's players are not interested in doing weights. "To play at international level legs have to be strong."
