The Old "Saints" go marching in by Pelham Juriansz Come August 3 and 4 the old boys of St.Joseph's, St. Peter's, St. Benedict's and St. Anthony's will meet in the annual quadrangular tournament at the Benedictine grounds at Kotahena. It is the 35th in the series and the defending champions and hosts the Old Bens have got the most impressive record of all having won the tourney 11 times, while the Old Joes and Old Petes have won nine encounters each with St. Anthony's not far behind with eight. This kind of tournament augurs well for good fellowship and camaraderie amongst the leading Catholic schools in the country. Last week these four schools were involved in an over 40's Tournament where former Sri Lankan vice captain Roy Dias(with two unbeaten innings of 85) and Sri Lanka 's former wicket keeper batsman Amal Silva stroked an elegant century. The series this weekend will feature some of the younger old boys and a number of past Sri Lankan cricketers who have played in these games. Former Benedictine cricket captain Lal Wickramatunga will be the Chief Guest and Neville Casie Chetty the Guest of Honour at the final. This series which started in 1963 by the Old Bens have trophies presnted by the Old Bens in memory of Basil Noyar(Best Batsman), General Cecil Waidyartane trophy (Best Bowler), Johnny Martin(Best Fielder), Premnath Moraes(Man of the final). |
