Shuttlers fail to qualify

MANCHESTER, Friday - The two Sri Lankan shuttlers who entered the last 16 for the first time at any games failed to qualify for the semi- finals in the men's and women's singles at the 17th Commonwealth Games here last night.

Niluka Karunaratne who did very well the previous day to beat Canada's Milroy 3-2 lost his third round match to New Zealand's Geoff Bellingham 0-3 (3-7, 3-7, 1-7). The Kiwi is the country's No. 2 and ranked No. 21 in the world. Chandrika de Silva too lost in the third round to Susan Hughes of Scotland 0-3 (0-7, 7-8, 0-7). The Scott lass is the country's No. 1 who is seeded No. 8 here. Gamini Walgama and Suranga Fernando failed again in shooting. This time in the men's 50 metres pistol singles event Walgama finished 19th with 513 points while Fernando was 20th with 512 points. Pushpamali Ramanayake who came into the final of the women's 10 metres air rifle singles event was 6th with 101.7 points.

The rugby 7s is due to start later tonight and Sri Lanka play Wales at 12.20 a.m. Sri Lanka time and 1.50 a.m. Sri Lanka time tomorrow (Sat.). Tomorrow (Sat) they are to meet Tonga in the final pool 'B' match.
