Statement by Minister Azwer

The President has frequently stated that she will extend her fullest co-operation to the ongoing peace process. This indeed is a welcoming statement. However, the President's brother Anura Bandaranaike has now joined hands with the Marxist JVPers in an attempt to sabotage this ongoing peace process.

This is actually a very unhealthy trend. Therefore we should request the President to control her brother in order to save the schoolchildren of this country from falling prey to disruptive elements and ruin their education, thereby ruining their future. This is made in the name of the peace-loving people of this country".

This statement was made by Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Alhaj A. H. M. Azwer who was the chief guest at the Meelad-Un-Nabi celebrations organised by the Al-Hidaya Maha Vidyalaya, Colombo 10, today (1 August 2002). The function was presided by the Principal Mrs. N. U. M. A. Cader.

The Minister also said that at present the Hon. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is working tirelessly to make the ongoing peace process a lasting success, with the blessing of the world's leaders. The Prime Minister has visited India, Europe and USA and met their respective leaders to appraise them of the current situation and to seek their support. The President of the USA assured our Prime Minister of his fullest co-operation by proclaiming that "we are with you in this process". This is the first time in the history that a US President has assured leader of another country of the closest co-operation and assistance in this manner. It is an indication of the confidence that the USA has placed on the leadership of Hon. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The USA is also willing to support us in reviving the economy at this crucial juncture.

Speaking on the visit of President General Musharraf of Pakistan, the Minister stated that it occurred at a very important juncture when Sri Lanka is yearning for peace. We recall that in the past, Pakistan has come to our assistance during extreme difficulties and at times of war and peace. The visit of Pakistan's President is also an acknowledgment of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's remarkable statesmanship in bringing every section of the International Community to extend their support to our country in solving the ethnic conflict to establish peace in our country. The JVP has launched a protest campaign to coincide with the visit of Gen. Musharraf. This is a very bad precedent and against all accepted human norms and values. We should remind our people of JVP's past atrocities and how they misled schoolchildren in the past. The parents must be very cautious and alert and make sure that their children return home direct safely after school hours. Every responsible parent should keep this in mind in the interest of their own children.
