I extend our sincere condolences on behalf of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka, states a condolence message issued by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. Shri Krishna Kant remained steadfast in his defence of freedom and democratic ideals. His was a long journey in the service of the Nation and its people, a service which began while still a student at the age of fifteen, in the "Quit India Movement" and continued till his death as the Vice President of the Republic of India. Shri Krishna Kant had won the affection, and respect of all peoples of India, the message adds. Apart from his achievements in the political field, Shri Krishna Kant was a connoisseur of Urdu poetry and also a prolific writer. His interests were wide and varied. He was a distinguished academic who had earned the plaudits of a broad spectrum of the international community. His demise is a great loss to India and her neighbours. Sri Lanka had the honour of his gracious presence in Colombo, in the year 2000, at the funeral of my mother, the late Prime Minister, Hon. Sirimavo R.D. Bandaranaike.
