by Wadduwa special correspondent The Minister of Employment and Labour has appointed a team of labour officers to investigate defaulters of the Employees Provident Fund and to prosecute them and also to provide instructions for despatch of contributions to the EPF on due dates. The Government is always looking to the welfare of the working sector and upgrade their living standard, said Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe on the occasion of computerising the EPF and to expedite the payment of the EPF on district basis.The conference was held at the Labour Office Kalutara. He said that the policy of the Ministry is to provide opportunities to make best use from the savings of the employees. "All the employees of the Labour Sector work in various Institutions for even twenty-years, but on the day of their retirement, they receive only a small amount of money for future security. The Policy of the present government is to provide a higher living standard for the Working Sector", he said. He said that false propaganda has been spread in the country that the Provident Fund and Pension Scheme of employees would be discontinued, but under the new scheme the employees could obtain the Funds to be utilised for useful projects that would benefit them. In future the payment of Provident Fund would be given on district basis. He said that seventy-one EPF defaulters have been detected by the special team of labour officers appointed by the Ministry. He assured that with the assistance of the International Labour Organisation, a housing project would be implemented to create a house-owing society. The Minister said that a Special Employment Board would be set up in each district to provide employment opportunities to school-leavers irrespective of party differences. Mahinda Gammanpila Secretary of the Ministry, Mahinda Madihahewa, Commissioner of Labour, Lukshman Wijemanna district MP Kalutara and A.M. Yusuff Provincial Council Member of the WP also spoke. |
