Lanka signs maritime agreement with Belgium, Luxembourg

Belgium, Luxembourg and Sri Lanka negotiated an agreement on maritime transport in Colombo last week.

The agreement will pave the way for smoother flow of maritime traffic and trade, where each country will practically treat ships and cargo from the other country as their own. This may also open the doors of opportunity for Sri Lankan seafarers to be considered for employment on vessels sailing under the Belgian Flag, a Ports Authority spokesman said.

The discussion on this agreement was successfully concluded at the Ministry of Port Development and Shipping with the participation and advice of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently.

The Sri Lankan delegation included, officials of the Ministry of Port Development and Shipping, Sri Lanka Ports Authority and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Secretary, on behalf of Sri Lanka Ministry of Port Development and Shipping, W. A. S. Perera, on behalf of Belgium, Director General Administration for Maritime Affairs and Shipping, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in Belgium, Mr. Michel Joseph who signed in agreement.
