Bangladesh ferry capsizes, at least two dead

DHAKA, July 31 (Reuters) - A Bangladeshi river ferry sank on Wednesday, killing at least two children and leaving nearly 30 other people missing, officials said.

Nearly 20 people were either rescued or swam to safety when the ferry M. L. Lucky Star carrying some 50 passengers capsized on the Buriganga River at Khoamara, 10 km (six miles) from Dhaka.

"Bodies of two children have been recovered. Fire Service divers are searching for more bodies," Afzal Sharif, an officer of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, told Reuters.

The cause of the sinking was not yet known, Sharif said.

Bangladesh has a long history of ferry accidents and of chronic neglect of maritime safety regulations. The country's worst ferry disaster in 1986 killed around 600 people.

At least 125 people died in May when the ferry M. L. Surha with some 500 people on board sank in the Baleswar river.
