Clarification

The article titled "A fledgling Test Crickets after just one school match" published in the Sports Page of the Daily News of 31st July, 2002 would give rise to certain misconceptions and creates an impression that Michael VanDort was left out from the Josephian team for reasons other than Crikcet. Therefore, I wish to clarify the position. The strong Josephian team of 1996/97 led by Trevine Mathew and coached by the late Gary Melder was one of the most successful Josephian sides in recent times.

They won 07 matches and needed as runners up in the School League and also became the All Island School limited over champions, 17-year-old Michael who was known as Graydon at School was a promising left hand bat with undoubted potential.

Unfortunately, due to the fierce competition for places he was unable to force his way into the side until the Trinity game, where a senior player was unavailable due to commitment with the Sri Lanka School team. Michale duly scored a half century but had to make way for the senior player when the team was selected for the Big Match against St. Peter's the following week Michael left St. Joseph's College shortly thereafter and continued his Cricket at club level where he developed rapidly and after a series of excellent performances deservedly earned his place in the National Side.

The Josephian community which feted him early this year is delighted with his success and wishes him the very best for the future. I too join them in extending my heartfelt congratulations to Michael for his magnificent century in the recently concluded test match against Bangladesh.
