by Ananda Kannangara

The five-member Committee to Inquire into Election Related Violence (CIEREV), appointed by the Government will have its fourth meeting at the BMICH Court Room next week.

"The objective of appointing the Committee is to inquire matters related to numerous violences which occurred during the recently concluded three elections, the December 2001 Parliamentary election and two other Local Government elections held in March and May this year", a senior Administrative Officer in charge of the Committee told the Daily News yesterday.

He also said that after conducting several meetings, persons who wish to give evidence on election violence will be summoned before the committee.

The CIEREV will be chaired by Justice Ranjit N.M. Dheeraratne, former Judge of Supreme Court while the other members are Kingsley Rodrigo, Executive Director, PAFFREL, Dr. Arjuna Parakrama, member of the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) and Dr. Joel Fernando, from the Organisation of Professional Association (OPA).

The other member of the Committee, Attorney-at-law Javid Yusuf will represent Opposition parties in the Parliament. He further said that persons or organisations who wish to give information regarding election violence to the CIEREV could send them in the form of affidavits by post.
