Iqbal Athas case: Bail refused

by Indeewara Thilakarathne

Colombo High Court judge Sarath Ambepitiya yesterday refused bail to the two suspects in the Iqbal Athas case. Petitioners Squadron Leader Sanjeewa Kannangara and Flight Lieutenant Rukman Herat were represented by their lawyers President's Counsel Ranjith Abeysuriya and Srinath Perera PC respectively.

Delivering the order, the High Court Judge stated that the continued voluntary presence of the first petitioner and his social status, psychological state of the children of both petitioners and some discrepancies in the identification parade could not be considered as exceptional circumstances.

The High Court judge stated that in a case pending appeal, bail could only be granted under exceptional circumstances.

Ranjith Abeysuriya PC with Duncan De Silva appeared for Squadron Leader Sanjeewa Kannangara. Srinath Perera PC with Christopher Alwis appeared for Flight Lieutenant Rukman Herat. Senior State Counsel P. Surasena with Amendra Seneviratne appeared for the prosecution.
