The Forest Department's major administrative and management strategies will be restructured with functions brought under four regional offices to make it more effective, Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake told the Daily News yesterday. Under the restrucuring, the head of the department will be known as the Conservator General of Forests. The four regional offices will be headed by Additional Conservators of Forest. In the Western and North Western Provinces' Forest Divisions of Kalutara, Gampaha, Kurunegala and Puttalam will come under Region 1 with the Regional Headquarters based in Colombo; Forest Divisions of Galle, Hambantota, Ratnapura and Kegalle of the Southern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces will be brought under Region 2 with the Regional Headquarters in Ratnapura; Forest Divisions of Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Moneragala and Badulla of the Central and Uva Provinces will come under Region 3 with the Regional Headquarters in Nuwara-Eliya and existing Forest Divisions of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, Ampara, Vavuniya of the North Central, Eastern and Northern Provinces will come under Region 4 with the Regional Headquarters based in Anuradhapura. The restructuring of the Forst Department has been recommended by the Asian Development Bank since the existing administrative structure is concentrated at the Head Office which makes it dificult to supervise and control field staff at the divisional, range and beat levels. |
