by Nadira Gunatilleke World Vision Lanka (WVL), one of the leading NGOs engaged in several social welfare projects countrywide has provided Rs. 1 million worth consignment of "Desferal Amps", an urgent medicine needed by thalassaemia patients in the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, a WVL spokesman said. He said that this consignment of drugs has been provided with the sponsorship of the countrywide zonal development programs of the WVL, responding to a request made by Dr. M.M. Arambepola, the specialist doctor attached to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital. Thalassaemia is a hereditary disease and the children who suffer from this disease have to be given proper treatment. Otherwise those children will die within the first decade of life. To survive, Thalassaemics need blood transfusions every four weeks and a special drug named "Desferal" which is required to remove excess iron accumulated in the body. The disease is common in the Wayamba province especially in the Kurunegala district. It is believed that the children of marriages between first cousins are more prone to thalassaemia than ordinary children. |
