Muslims given their rightful place - Minister Mohamed

The visiting Sri Lankan Minister for Western Regional Development M.H. Mohamed who was on a visit to Saudi Arabia recently met the Deputy Custodian of the Two Holy mosques King Fahad Bin Abdul Aziz in Taif. The meeting was also attended by the Prince, Deputy Premier and Minister of Defense and Aviation Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz, Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Saudi Al Faisal, the Chief of Bureau of Intelligence, Prince Nawaf Bin Abdul Aziz, Sri Lankan ambassador Ibrahim Sahib Ansar and the Consul General Abdul Cader Mohammed Ibrahi.

Minister Mohamed said that he took the opportunity of briefing Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz of the recent peace moves between the government and the LTTE and also the rehabilitation of programs undertaken in re-locating the displaced Muslims in the north and the east of the island. Mohamed pointed out that it would required nearly five million Saudi Riyals to renovate the mosques and abandoned buildings in the north particularly in the Jaffna District.

Mohamed who is the founder member of the Constituent Council of the Muslim World League, MWL, was on a special invitation extended to him by the Royal Protocol and the Ministry of Endowments, Guidance. He also met the Chairman of the Shoura Council, Dr. Sheikh Saleh Bin Humeid and the Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Sheikh Saleh Bin Abduul Aziz Al Sheikh.

The minister said that he was elected the Chairman of the Muslim 'Parliamentarian Peace Council which is committed to look after the interests of the community in the government's implementation of peace plans with the Tamil rebels. Mohamed said that Muslims are a peaceful community and they have learnt to co-exist with the majority Sinhalese and the other minorities in the island. He also said that government under the leadership of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has given them their rightful place.
