Country must keep pace with technological development - Speaker

by Ja-Ela Group Correspondent

The country and its institutions have to keep pace with new technological developments in the world if it is to achieve economic and social development and progress. Parliament is no exception to this rule. Very soon Parliamentarians will be able to obtain quick answers to their questions from the relevant Ministers through the internet without having to wait for days, months or perhaps years to seek answers for matters of public interest, said Speaker Joseph Michael Perera.

He was speaking at a ceremony held at the Joseph Michael Perera Foundation, Gampaha to mark the issuing of free passes for travel in Peoplised Transport Buses to members of the Gampaha District Media Forum recently.

The Speaker said media personnel who were earlier known as journalists performed a vital service in keeping the government and the public informed about the current developments in the country and the outside world. Provincial correspondents in particular were performing a vital duty and responsibility in this regard. The technology of transmitting news too has developed rapidly in recent years. A provincial correspondent who had to post his report or take it personally to the media institution concerned earlier can now fax it and make it available for publication within a matter of few minutes. He said measures have now been taken to introduce modern technology to schools in the Negombo district through their teachers.

Referring to Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Speaker said he is an honest politician who looked at problems on a national perspective without giving way to parochial attitudes. Politicians of his ilk are found on both sides of the country's political divide. If all such politicians made a united effort to usher in peace and develop this country it would soon become a heaven on earth.

Gampaha District MP, Nalin Dissanayake said Speaker Joseph Michael Perera has been a steadfast UNPer who had stood by the party during good and lean times. Chairman, Gampaha Bus Company, Nimal Ranasinghe, President, Gampaha District Media Forum, Anura Wickramasinghe and several others also spoke.
