Kegalle bus depot needs new fleet - Manager

by Kegalle special correspondent

The Manager Kegalle Peoplised Bus Company Depot disclosed to the Daily News recently that each month the buses of the Kegalle Depot transport approximately 22 lakhs and forty thousand passengers.

Manager Keerthi Siriyakumara said 90 per cent of the buses of this depot are over 15 years old and some of them are to be kept off the road but he has arranged to take the maximum service out of them by attending to minor repairs, until such time the depot is provided with some new buses.

The manager said that the total income of the depot last February was Rupees twelve million (12 m) and the Kegalle depot has come to the seventh place in respect of earnings when compared to other depots in the Sabaragamuwa Province. This figure has been obtained after incurring the increased fuel expenditure. The depot has obtained a profit of Rs. 1.40 from running each kilometre, he said.

The Manager said hardwork and duty consciousness of all the employees has contributed in no uncertain terms for this tremendous success and progress.

In the month of March 2002, this bus depot had a profit of Rupees 1.35 million, in April the profit was Rupees 1.41 million and May Rupees 1.51 million and he derived this income by using 145 to 150 buses.

Owing to the increase of fuel prices the depot has spent an additional sum of Rupees 9 lakhs, the Manager said. In May this year the depot has been successful in obtaining the second place in profit making in respect of all depots in the Sabaragamuwa Province. If the Sabaragamuwa Bus Company provided a few more buses, in good condition, this depot can undoubtedly, be turned to a profit spinner for the Sabaragamuwa Bus Company and the government, the manager disclosed.

He said 100 per cent of the employees of Kegalle depot has contributed their labour to achieve these profits and that he is thankful to all those employees for their unstinted cooperation.
