Relief for electricity users

The Energy Supply committee yesterday decided to bring down the charges for electricity consumption not exceeding 90 units.

The decision was taken by the Energy Supply Committee in order to give the general consumers a degree of relief from the Value Added Tax which was effected from yesterday.

In accordance with this decision the Ceylon Electricity Board will take steps to bring down the charges for electricity consumption upto 90 units in correspondence with VAT. With the implementation of the VAT the electricity bills of the consumers using less than 30 units will be reduced automatically as they are exempt from the VAT.

The electricity bills of the consumers who utilise 30 to 90 units will remain unchanged.

As the VAT percentage is lower than that of the GST which was in effect earlier, this reduction in the electricity bill charges will give a concession to all consumers irrespective of the amount of units utilised. This will benefit 78 per cent of the electricity consumers out of the total 2.9 million consumers as they using less than 90 units.
