by Sarath Malalasekera The CID told the Fort Magistrate yesterday that the ladies' handbag equipped with VH-09 video camera imported to Sri Lanka had been handed over to the President at the Presidential Secretariat by the then Additional Director General Intelligence T.V. Sumanasekera. The CID also informed the Judge that investigations are being conducted under the Public property Act. The handbag was purchased with funds allocated for undercover operations of the NIB through the National Budget. The CID filing a report in connection with their investigations into the ladies' handbag before the Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Priyantha Fernando stated that the Additional Director General of the Intelligence Bureau had authorised the funds to import this colour camera from the UK. They said that the Police officers at the Intelligence Bureau had made an entry to this effect in their official books. The report further stated that this handbag with the colour video camera had never been used by the undercover operations unit of the NIB. This handbag with a hidden camcorder was ordered by T.V. Sumanasekera in October 2001 through a local company from the UK. On an application by the CID the Judge directed that a further report be submitted in connection with their investigations on August 28. |
