NCE celebrates 10 years of Export Excellence

by Kushani Ratnayake

The National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCE) will elebrate 10 years of Export Excellence at the 10th Annual Export Awards ceremony on August 16 at the Colombo Hilton. The ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Germany, Juergen Elias will be the chief guest.

The awards scheme is exclusively for the members of the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCE) who make a major contribution to the country, competing in the global market generating employment opportunities and earning valuable foreign exchange, NCE Vice President, Kingsley Bernard said.

Therefore, the objective is not only to recognise such members for their commitment and contribution to the NCE but also to the country's export drive and its economy.

With the steady growth of membership which now stands at 400, the number of applications received this year for the awards scheme had a growth of 30% compared to last year, he said.

Applications were invited under six sectors namely, Agriculture Traditional, Agriculture non-Traditional, Value Added Tea, Industry, Gems and Jewellery and Service Provided to Exporters. Exporters who fall into these sectors were classified into Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large," he said.

In addition, the Most Outstanding Exporter, under each sector has been recognised. "The performance of the member applications were evaluated using multiple criteria, which can be broadly categorised into export performance, market product development, brand marketing, effective management of marketing and capital," he said.

In view of the keen interest shown by the garment sector, NCE has also created a sector for the garment exporters who earn valuable foreign exchange. "Every year it has been the tradition of the NCE to improve in the Export Award Scheme and to identify more categories, and to recognise exporters for additional awards.

All members were invited to send their applications which was thereafter evaluated and assessed by an eminent panel of judges of eight members selected from organisations which are directly or indirectly connected to exports, and the award winners were selected," Mr. Bernard said.

The panel of judges comprises the Executive Director of the Institute of Policy Studies, Saman Kelegama, Head-Industry Division of Central Bank of Sri Lanka, S. Lankathilake, Deputy Director General, Sri Lanka Standards Institution, Shirani Weragoda, Marketing and Development Consultant of Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing, Nalin Attygalle, Tea Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Tea Board, H.D Hemaratne, Council Member, Chartered Institute of Management Accounts, Milroy Gonsal, Director General, Sri Lanka Export Development Board, L.S.G Tillekeratne and Fellowship Member, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, Saliya Kumara.
