SLMM chief wants clarification of zone of separation

by Ranga Jayasuriya

Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Chief Gen Trond Furuhovde visiting the East is expected to insist that the Security Forces and the LTTE outline the zone of separation between the territories held by them in order to open the A 5 Valachchenai- Kandy highway.

"The SLMM Chief wants to clarify the exact zone of separation between the Government and the LTTE held areas in the East before the opening of A 5 road. The zone of separation is not absolutely clear," SLMM Spokesman Teitur Torkelsson told the Daily News.

The SLMM Chief yesterday left for the East on a four day visit to hold talks with the Security Forces and the LTTE area commanders on the opening of the A 5 highway and the general implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement.

The SLMM Chief is also expected to draw both parties attention to maintain direct communications between the commanders of both sides. The discussions was also expected to focus on complaints of extortion and abductions made against the LTTE.

"He will draw the attention of the LTTE leadership in the East on the large number of complaints received from the East," the spokesman said.

According to the SLMM, the largest number of complaints were reported from Batticaloa followed by Trincomalee and Ampara.

The SLMM Chief will visit Trincomalee today (10) and Muttur tomorrow.

He was accompanied by two representatives of the Peace Secretariat and the LTTE political wing. In Muttur, he is expected to meet Muslim community leaders and discuss the precautionary measures to avoid recurrence of communal violence which took place recently.
