by Sarath Malalasekera The Maligakanda Magistrate and Additional Disrict Judge Ms. Sarojani Kusala Weerawardena yesterday granted bail to former Air Force Commander Air Marshal Jayalath Weerakkody when he appeared on notice before court in connection with a fatal accident case. The Judge ordered the former Air Force Chief to furnish cash bail in Rs. 5,000 and a bond of Rs. 25,000 with a surety. At the outset Sub Inspector A.W. Bandara, OIC Traffic Borella filed a further report in connection with the investigations into the accident and said that the dossier of the investigations had been forwarded to the Attorney General and awaiting a reply to take necessary action. Asoka Weerasooriya, senior counsel for the former Air Marshal, told court that his client could only be charged under section 298 and not on any other charge. After submissions by Police and the Senior Defence Counsel the Judge granted bail to Weerakkody and directed him to appear in court on September 13, 2002. Asoka Weerasooriya with Ajith Pathirana, Hasitha Ponnamperuma and Sanjeewa Edirisinghe appeared for Weerakkody. |
