by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs (SLFYC) is to conduct their annual general meeting in Jaffna in the final week of August. Nearly 3,000 youth attached to 10,000 Youth Clubs countrywide are due to attend this event which will be held for the first time in Jaffna. The SLFYC will conduct discussions with the LTTE Political Wing Leader Thamil Chelvam this week to make initial arrangements for this AGM and seek the LTTE assistance to reactivate the Youth Clubs in the North-East areas, SLFYC Secretary Sajeewa Upuljith told the 'Daily News' yesterday. He said the federation will also discuss with the LTTE to set up a SLFYC District Office in Kilinochchi which aims to get more youth participation towards the youth clubs operated in the area. Upuljith said they are due to invite the LTTE Leader Prabhakaran as the Chief Guest to this AGM. Of these 3,000 youth participating at the AGM 50 youth will represent youth clubs from each Divisional Secretariat division, he said. " At present 2500 youth clubs are operating in the North-East. Nearly 50,000 youth have already become active members of these youth clubs. The majority of the youth in the North-East areas have obtained membership of the youth clubs and they are operating successfully in these areas." Meanwhile the federation has requested the North-East Provincial Council to assist develop youth activities. The Provincial Council has pledged to grant Rs. 10 million for this purpose, he added. |
