Kandy's historic Esala Perahera, the biggest cultural and religious pageant will commence with the traditional "kap planting" ceremony at the four devales at the auspicious time of 6.45 a.m. on July 11. The Perahera will be conducted within the devale precincts from July 11 to July 13. The first segment of the Esala Perahera, the Kumbal Perahera will parade the streets of Kandy on July 14 and continue till July 18. The most colourful segment of the Kandy Perahera, the Randoli Perahera will commence on July 19 and continue till July 23 when the last night Perahera, the grand finale will take place. The Esala festival will be concluded with the Day Perahera on July 24. This will be preceded by the water cutting ceremony at Getambe in the early hours of July 24 and the depositing of the Sacred Relics in the Sri Dalada Maligawa at the auspicious time of 5.11 p.m. on the same day. Kandy SSP Asoka Ratnaweera said that a special 5,000 strong police unit will be deployed to ensure tight security. Kandy Mayor Kesara Senanayake, Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijayeratne, officials and media personnel were also present. |
