Royal-Isipatana clash should be a thriller by Chris Dhambarage Two unbeaten teams Royal and Isipatana will battle it out for supremacy when they clash in their annual inter school rugby encounter for the Major Milroy Fernando trophy at Longden Place today. Both teams have enjoyed a fantastic season and the game could probably decide the champions of the 'A' Division League tournament. Royal who began the season as one of the strongest outfits this year have lived upto that expectations and have already defeated Zahira, St. Peter's, Ananda, St. Anthony's and S. Thomas' all by convincing margins. Isipatana too have maintained their reputation as a formidable side and will be determined to maintain their unbeaten record in the current season. They have the knack of rising to the big occasion as they did prove it in the game against Wesley College which they won by a close margin of 6-3. But they also proved that they could dominate any game when required by thrashing Trinity College Kandy 43-8 at Pallekele which is easily one of the biggest victories recorded in the series. The secret behind Royal's success this year is that they are a well balanced team and their experience have provided them that extra advantage which some of the other teams does not possess. Last week they gave their traditional rivals S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia a fine lesson of fast open rugby where they notched up the highest ever score in the series between the two schools. The teams: Royal: Shamil Mohamed, Mafaz Ismail, Venura Perera, Nanda Abeysekera, Raqueeb Barry, Channa de Silva, Kushan Athukorale, Dushanth Lewke, Zulki Hamid (captain) and Ishan Perera, Indika de Silva, Rajith Jayasundera, Bilal Yusuf, Varun Wijewardena, Chamath Danawansa. Isipatana: M. D. A. C. Walpola (captain), A. H. A. Bandara, W. D. Boteju, D. G. B. Thalagampola, M. S. K. Premaratne, A. Udayanga, T. D. Seneviratne, Anuradha Dharamatilleke, L. D. S. Dharmasiri, K. L. Liyanage, R. G. S. Fernando, A. P. Achalanka, A. P. Kumara, Duminda Priyadarshana, Krishan Wettasinghe. |
