Fatal accidents will lead to cancellation of route permits

by Ranil Wijayapala

The route permits of private bus owners will be cancelled if their buses are involved in fatal accidents under new regulations.

Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation Minister Tilak Marapana said yesterday that these regulations will be brought to curb the rising number of fatal accidents involving private buses.

Addressing a meeting at the Defence Ministry to discuss the rising number of road accidents, the Minister said bus owners should also share the responsibility of the fatal accidents reported recently in which number of private buses were involved.

"Part of the responsibility lies with the owners as they select drivers for their buses," the Minister added.

They should consider the drivers' experience, education, social background and character before deploying them as drivers, the Minister added. He said drunken drivers and drug addicts also operate buses. Competitiveness and recklessness are other factors lead to accidents.

State Transport Minister Upali Piyasoma participating in this discussion said a program should be devised to give proper training for private bus crews.

Motor Traffic Commissioner V. Jinadasa, Chairman of the National Transport Commission Chairman S. Thalagune, DIG Traffic Daya Jayasundera and several other officials also participated.
