by Jaffna Special Correspondent Dr. Nobert Ropers, Director Berghof Foundation for Conflict Studies donated Rs. 500,000 worth of mass Communication equipment to the North Sri Lanka Journalists Association to further their media work in Jaffna. R. Nimalan Karthekeyan, Assistant Secretary, National Peace Council and a patron of North Sri Lanka Journalists Association sponsored the request of Northern journalists with a view to facilitate them to keep abreast of modern techniques in mass communication. Speaking at the gift presentation ceremony held at City hall Jaffna presided by S. Kathirgamathamby, President, North Sri Lanka Journalists Association Dr. Nobert said that he was moved and shocked to witness the devastation caused by the war in Jaffna. It was a surprise that the mediamen in Jaffna were able to perform their duties in the midst of such destruction. Our presentation of modern communication equipment should be used to enhance your quality of output so that you could independently without fear or favour bring about a qualitative change and sustainable impact in the Jaffna peninsula. Nimalan Karthekeyan, Assistant Secretary, National Peace Council said a vibrant and responsible media culture could be a potent force to bring people together and bring about greater understanding between them. You have an important role to play in creating awareness amongst various stakeholders and the public. Your organisation has in your inimitable way performed and contributed to the well being of the society in the North and the South. We wish to assure you of our cooperation and support to build your own capacity as an effective institution consisting of professional journalists. "We hope to assist you in the sphere of peace initiation and awareness on the important issues that confront and have an impact on the society in North and South Sri Lanka", he said. |
