by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The Department of Internal Trade will launch an islandwide operation in the next two weeks to nab unscrupulous traders who sell goods at higher prices. Commissioner of the Department of Internal Trade Janaka Sugathadasa said that in an open economic system prices can fluctuate but traders should still mark the prices. They cannot just increase prices of goods in an ad-hoc manner as they wish, he noted. "At present we encounter a shortage of vehicles but the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayake approved my request to hire the required amount of vehicles for this operation," the Commissioner said. We will conduct this operation in the next three months in the main Districts, he said. The maximum fine for traders who sell goods at higher prices is just Rs. 3000. Under the new Consumer Protection and Fair Trading Authority Act which will be presented in Parliament possibly in the next two months, this will be increased substantially. |
