Full scale clean-up of all canals

by Ambalangoda central special correspondent

A full-scale, reconstruction and clean-up operation of all canals in Ambalangoda is in the pipeline.

Altogether a total of seven canals of varying dimensions exist at separate locations in the Ambalangoda urban zone and the Ambalangoda Urban Council is currently conducting a complete assessement of these canals. In the process the UC has found that as a result of years of neglect all these canals have now reached an acute shrunken state with huge layers of mud and dirt accumulated over a very long period of time being deposited along canal beds

According to the UC's assessment reports, it is reported that these impediments to the free flow of canal water have caused a sharp showdown in the water moving down even during raining weather.

Thus, very often pools of smelly stagnant water are accumulating along these canals and the creation of such pools have contributed a surge in the mosquito menace, spread of diseases and other health-related problems.

The UC has drawn up a plan in consultation with the Urban Development Authority and the implementation of this plan will effect a long-term solution to overcome the existing moribund condition of these canals. Dredging, reinforcement of sides of canals with concrete slabs, mending damaged areas are part of this reconstruction and clean-up program.

Porok ela, Poya seema para ela, Heen ela, Okada ela, Namal ela, Enderamulla-Manane ela are among the canals that are on target under this project. This canal improvement program estimated at Rs. 50 million will be funded by the Urban Development Authority.

The Secretary of the Ambalangoda Urban Council said that the UC has already laid the groundwork for the task ahead.
