by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Colombo Municipal health officials will follow up their anti-dengue campaign with a one week "clean-up or pay-up" deadline imposed on households which do not adhere to Municipality health conditions. The follow up action is implemented under the "Green Star Home" program in which City dwellings which have a healthy physical environment outdoors will be issued a "Green Star Home" label for display on their walls or doors, Colombo Municipal Council's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam told the Daily News yesterday. This weekend program will cover areas such as Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya, Milagiriya, Thimbirigasyaya, Borella, Slave Island, Cinnamon Gardens and Kirulapona. Officials estimate that there are around 15,000 houses and other Government and private institutions in this area. "Notices will be issued on chief occupants of houses and owners of institutions which pose environmental hazards conducive to mosquito breeding, warning them to clean them within one week," added Dr. Kariyawasam. He said strict legal measures will be taken against those who do not adhere to Municipal instructions. The notice is issued under the Mosquito Borne Disease Control Regulations. A workforce of 3,000 from the Municipal Council and members of the Rotary Club will participate in this program. "Residences which have been issued with notices earlier will be revisited to verify whether appropriate action has been taken to prevent mosquito breeding," Dr. Kariyawasam added. |
