Govt-LTTE talks in August by Ranil Wijayapala The proposed talks between the Government and the LTTE are expected to begin in Thailand on August 2, official sources told the Daily News yesterday. The Government has agreed to the date proposed by the LTTE, the sources added. Norwegian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Jon Westborg arrived Sri Lanka yesterday after a vacation in Norway, diplomatic sources said. Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen is also due to arrive Sri Lanka shortly to finalise matters related to the agenda for the Thailand peace talks. The Norwegian facilitators have already handed over questionnaires to both sides to prepare the agenda for the talks in Phuket. Government Spokesman and Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris on Thursday said that the Government and the LTTE are preparing the agenda for the Thailand talks. Minister Prof. Peiris earlier said that the establishment of an Interim Administration in the North and East will be one of the major issues in the agenda for the direct negotiations. Meanwhile, Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission General (rtd) Trond Furuhovde yesterday flew to Kilinochchi to continue discussions with the LTTE political hierarchy over the LTTE demand for a sea route for their cadres to move from the North to East. The SLMM head will also take this chance to iron out the problems that have arisen following Muttur and Kayts incidents and request the LTTE leadership to use their influence to defuse the situation. |
